Do's and Don'ts for employers during COVID-19 pandemic

From the Unifor website.

Employers can help if they:

DON’T

  • Require sick notes from workers for absences;
  • Discipline workers for self-isolating.

DO

  • Waive waiting periods for sick leave under collective agreements;
  • Provide personal protective equipment (PPE) where necessary and encourage work-from-home solutions where possible.

Employer-side law firms

Many employer-side law firms are attempting to convince employers to push costs off to the employer through maximizing the employees access to sick leave, vacation, insurance, EI, or income supports.

There are several issues for workers for this, namely the limited speed of access to funds in case of self-isolation, government-enforced shutdown, business closure, bankruptcy, worker sickness from COVID-19, or looking after someone who is sick.

  • Additional paid days leave is necessary to negotiation with employers.
  • Negotiated supports for workers should be shared.
  • If you work for a trade union and see mention of employer-side firms pushing anti-worker programs that download costs of this pandemic onto the most vulnerable, inform your national office.
